John Burkhardt is a principal at CB Preclinical Consulting, where he advises pharmaceutical companies on the non-clinical safety of new drugs in development. He is the former Senior Vice President, Head of Global Drug Safety Research and Development (DSRD), Head of Comparative Medicine, and Groton Site Head for Pfizer Laboratories.
At Pfizer, John was responsible for all aspects of non-clinical safety for small molecules, large molecules, vaccines, and animal care and welfare across all therapeutic areas and global sites. In addition, he oversaw all activities at the Pfizer Groton site, including public relations and site facilities.
Before his tenure at Pfizer, John led AbbVie Preclinical Safety in North Chicago, IL, where he was responsible for toxicology, pathology, and comparative medicine in global Research & Development. His expertise spans early drug discovery, late-stage development, regulatory review, and approval of both small and large molecules.
In 1992, John earned his Doctor of Philosophy and completed his Residency in Anatomic Pathology at Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in West Lafayette, Indiana. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Purdue University in 1988.
John has nearly 40 published scholarly works and has played a role in the development of hundreds of candidate pharmaceutical products, including dozens of approved, marketed pharmaceuticals.
